Fete Paradiso

From July 13--September 29, 2013, the first festival of artisan-crafted vintage carnival rides and carousels took place on Governor's Island in New York City. The late 19th and early 20th century amusements, constructed by a family of French artisans who were flown to New York in order to create them on-site, were made available to the public to ride and enjoy. They included a late 19th century bicycle carousel, one of only two existing, created to encourage the latest mode of transportation, and an early 20th century Music-Hall Ball Guzzler, a game in which a player is challenged to throw a ball into the mouths of caricatures of Josephine Baker, Charlie Chaplin, and other celebrities of the time.
